Every author runs things a little differently, but here’s how I personally think of each role in my process - for interest in all roles at this time please email me at maelana.nightingale@gmail.com
I will put out calls on my socials and newsletter when I have specific needs and openings!
These are the brave souls who get my stories first. For me, that means the book is already fully written (since I don’t write in chronological order), but it’s still very raw.
📚 Some authors send daily word counts or chapter-by-chapter drafts, but I hand over the whole messy picture
🔎 Your job is to point out plot holes, inconsistencies, confusing bits, or even just things that give you “the ick”
✨ Sometimes your feedback has led me to drastically change a story, but usually it’s about reordering, tightening, or plugging plot holes
Basically, alphas help me see the story’s bones before I get too attached 🦴
I don’t always use betas, but when I do, it’s because the story has already been through alpha feedback and I think it’s in good shape. This stage is about refinement.
👓 Fresh eyes catch what mine have stopped seeing
🧑🏫 Sometimes I bring in subject-matter experts—occupations, lived experiences, cultural or language checks
🛠️ The book hasn’t had its final polish yet, but I want to know if it feels ready for that step
Betas are the test drive before the story heads to the mechanic 🚗
ARC = Advanced Reader Copy. These are the people who sign up to read my book before release, for free, with the understanding that reviews are the main exchange.
💌 Free early copy of the book in exchange for an honest review
🕒 Life happens, and sometimes reviews are late—but the expectation is reviews will follow
🚀 ARCs are essential because reviews fuel visibility when the book launches
Think of ARC readers as the buzz-builders—the early spark that helps light the fire 🔥
This is like ARC readers leveled up.
📢 Expected not just to read and review, but to actively share posts, talk about the book on social media, and hype it up in Discord
🎁 Higher expectations mean higher rewards: shoutouts, early PR boxes if sales goals are met, acknowledgments on websites (and maybe even in books)
🤝 They’re not just readers—they’re cheerleaders and teammates
Street team = my book’s hype squad with pom-poms 🥳
If you sign up for any of these roles and discover the book isn’t for you, or life doesn’t leave you the bandwidth—please just communicate 🙏 Not every book is for every reader, and that’s perfectly fine. What matters most is respect, honesty, and clear expectations on both sides.
